Our history

Family-centred care: the Ronald McDonald House story

In 1974, Dr Audrey Evans, a pioneering paediatric oncologist, shared a powerful belief: a sick child is a sick family. From this idea, Ronald McDonald House Charities was born.

When four-year-old Kim Hill was diagnosed with leukaemia, her parents, Philadelphia Eagles player Fred Hill and his wife Kim, slept on waiting room chairs and ate from vending machines just to stay near her. Moved by their struggle, Eagles GM Jimmy Murray asked Dr Evans what could be done. Her answer: a house near the hospital where families could rest and recharge.

Thanks to a local McDonald’s fundraising effort, the first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia. It was the beginning of a global movement.

Supporting families in Australia

Seven years later, the first Ronald McDonald House outside North America (and the first in Australia) opened in Camperdown, Sydney. Located near the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children (now The Children’s Hospital at Westmead), our Camperdown House welcomed around 40 people each night for 14 years before relocating to Westmead in 1996.

Today, our 60-room Ronald McDonald House Westmead supports over 2,000 families each year through supported accommodationthe Day Pass Program, and extended meal services across the Westmead health precinct.

We call it the House that Love Built.

"Without this beautiful House, our family would probably have a different story. We will never forget what Ronald McDonald House Westmead has done for Cooper and the family and what they will continue to do for us moving forward. This truly is our second home and our extended family. What you have done for us, I will never forget."

Why a Gift in Will matters more than ever

Right now, demand for our services continues to grow. Despite our efforts, we still have to turn away around 400 families each year who are seeking accommodation close to the life-saving care their child needs.

We can change that with your help.

A Gift in your Will helps us plan ahead with certainty, expanding our reach and responding to the evolving needs of families. This includes opening a new Ronald McDonald House in Campbelltown, establishing more Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms and Hospitality Carts within partner hospitals, and continuing to adapt our services so families can stay close, wherever care is needed.

Leaving a Gift in your Will is a powerful way to make a lasting difference for families without impacting your finances today, while helping ensure no family has to face their child’s healthcare journey alone in the future.
